LESSON PLAN
Kevin Scheib (Wood Shop and Plastics Technology) weekly lesson plans (12/19/2011 to 12/23/2011)
Monday 12/19

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: We will start to plan wood down to proper size for the clock project. We will be using Red oak. It will take approximately 2 board feet per students.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Three students will be finished assembling their coffee tables and they will start to stain. We will be assembling the main case work for one student’s book case.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: I will give a demonstration on using the engraver to make the small name plate and attaching the clip pin to the back.
Tuesday 12/20

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: I will be giving a demonstration on cutting of the individual pieces for the clock. There will be a total of six different pieces of wood for the entire clock. This will take approximately two days till all students will have all pieces cut.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue working on individual projects. They will Two students will be cutting parts for door. I will be giving a demonstration on using the shaper table. This machine will only be used by the instructor do to the safety factors. This machine takes considerable experience to safely operate.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will continue to work on the small name plate project. Some students will start to work the chess set project. They will be attaching the chess pieces to the metal plate and then they will be coating with latex.
WENDNESDAY 12/21

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will continue to cut pieces of wood out for the clock project.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on individual projects.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students in the 2nd pd. will be removing their chess pieces from the latex molds. This will require the use of baby powder so that the latex does not stick to itself. I will be giving this demonstration first then students will do it. Students in the 3rd pd. will continue with the chess set project.
Thursday 12/22

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: We will be doing a complete cleaning and reorganizing of the wood shop before the holiday season. Power equipment must be cleaned and all hand tools cleaned and reorganized.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Same as 1st pd.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will put one coat of latex on chess pieces and then we will do cleanup work .

Monday 12/12

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: I will give a demonstration on staining their shelf project. Students will then proceed to stain their shelves. They may choose the color of stain that they prefer. Students must following all instructions and steps as given in order to achieve a good finish.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on individual projects. We will be assembling the coffee table projects today. Two students will be applying molding to the lower base cabinet of their gun cabinets. We will use the dado cutters on two other students Cabinets so we can start to assemble them.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Period 2 will be starting the Chess set project. I will be giving a demonstration on coating the chess pieces with latex mold builder. Period 3 will be finishing up the pen holder project.
Tuesday 12/13

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will continue to stain their shelves and students who have finished staining the day before will be clear coating.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue with individual projects and I will provide assistance as needed. Some students do need more assistance then others and I will be spending more time with these students.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: 2nd period will continue with coating of pieces. The 3rd period class will be given the demonstration on coating the chess pieces for the chess project.
WENDNESDAY 12/14

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will continue with staining and clear coating of shelves.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Will give a demonstration on Staining. Three students will be staining their projects. Others will continue to work on projects.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Bothe class will continue with coating of chess piece. Each student will receive a complete chess set to coat. We will be applying three coats to the chess set.
Thursday 12/15

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Most students will be done staining and clear coating their first coat I will give a demonstration on sanding the first coat and stress to the students the importance of removing any dirt from the finish and how to properly wipe it down be for starting the third coat.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on individual projects. Students who stained the day before will start to do there clear coating. They will be using and indoor/outdoor clear coat so that anything that is wet like a glass will not damage the finish.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will be coating chess pieces. Some students will be finishing the pen holder project.
Friday 12/16

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will be applying last coat of clear coat. We will then start to plane lumber down for the clock project. We will be using Red Oak.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on individual projects.

Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: I will be giving a demonstration on using the Plastic Engraving Machine this will take approximately 20 minutes. When we are done some students will proceed to coat chess pieces and other students will start to do their engraving project. Students will be doing their names on the engraver. They will be aloud to chose from a variety of colors.

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will be working on shelf projects. We will be sanding all parts and routering the edges that need to be routed.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will be working on individual projects. I will be giving a demonstration on using the chisel.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will be working on the pen holder projects. They must have some item that can be laid flat inside the mold.

Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on individual projects.

WENDNESDAY 12/7

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: I will be giving a demonstration on assembling projects. Students will be using the air nail gun and glue to assemble. I will be working with each student during this process.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to assemble projects.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will continue to work on acrylic pen holders. They must follow all steps correctly in order for project to be finished correctly.

Thursday 12/8

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: We will continue to assemble shelf projects .

Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on projects.

Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students should have all poured there projects by today. Most students will be sanding and buffing.

Friday 12/9

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will continue to cut their project pieces to proper sizes.

Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on projects.

Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: I will be giving a demonstration on drilling the hole for the pen base. Students will be doing this on the Drill press this will be a two step process. They will then add the pen holder. They must put piece of tape on the back with their name on and hand it in for a grade.

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: I will be giving a demonstration on assembling the stool. We will be using the air nail gun and the electric drills.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: I will be giving a demonstration on using the Dove Tail Jigs This will take most of the time of class. If any time is left students will be able to work.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will be finishing up any buffing to be done on the mugs. We will finish applying the handles to the mugs.

Tuesday 11/15

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: We will be assembling Benches. I will be giving a demonstration cutting plugs and filling the nail holes and screw holes.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on projects.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: I will be giving a demonstration on cutting out stencils to apply to the mugs and the use of the sand blaster. Students will be adding designs to the mugs.

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will continue the sanding of the project pieces and cutting the angle on the middle brace piece.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: I will be giving a demonstration on using the Dado blades on the tale saw to cut Dado joints in two students project pieces.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: I will be giving the demonstration on getting The Mug project started. We will be cutting a piece of clear acrylic for the bottom of the mug. I will be give demonstration on how to glue it in position.
Tuesday 11/8

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: We will start to plan lumber down to make the top of the benches. We will be gluing the boards together to achieve the proper width.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will be working on projects. I will be giving a demonstration on assembling the lower cabinet of a gun cabinet.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will be working on glue it in position if they did not get to it on Monday. I will be giving a demonstration on how to sand the edges of the bottom down to the proper side and how to use the hand sanders.
WENDNESDAY 11/9

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: I will be giving a demonstration on gluing the boards together for the proper width. We will then start to glue. All students will be helping with this so they have a full understanding of the process.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: I will be giving a demonstration on using the Dove tail cutters. We will be using them on a large blanket chest.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will be sanding the bottom to proper size. I will give demonstration on buffing it to finish the bottom. Students will be receiving the acrylic rod for the handle.
Thursday 11/10

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: We will be cutting boards to a rough measurement and then each student will be planning their own board done to the proper thickness of ¾”. They will then run the board through the jointer and then the table saw to achieve the proper width. They will then cut to the proper length and make sure it is square.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on projects

Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will be finishing the sanding and the buffing of the bottom of the mug.

Monday 10/31 *Due to repairs on a pipe in the wood shop we will be out of the shop on Monday or Tuesday. We will be over in the Power Tech room or the Health Room*

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: I will be giving a demonstration on Laying out of the angles to be cut on the bench ends. They will also be tracing the radius on the bottom edge of pieces. I will then give a demonstration on using the Band saw to cut the project pieces out. We will be using three different Band Saws. Students may choose which one they are more comfortable using.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: I will give a demonstration using the Power Miter Saw to the advanced class and the test will be given the following Day.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will continue with the desk organizer project. They will be gluing together. After 24 hours they will be sanding using three different grits of sand paper.
Tuesday 11/1

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will continue to cut project pieces out.

Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Test will be given on the power miter saw. Students will continue to work on individual projects. As students get to different processes with project part construction I will be give group demonstrations’.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: I will give a demonstration on buffing the project. There is a specific order to follow in buffing this project.


WENDNESDAY 11/2

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will continue to cut project pieces out. I will also be giving a sanding demonstration using the disk sander and the vertical sander.

Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on projects.

Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will continue to work on the desk organizer project.
Thursday 11/3

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will be sanding using the disc sander and the vertical sander.

Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on projects

Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will be finishing the desk organizer today. If there is enough time left in the class period we will be starting the next project which will be the acrylic mug.

Friday 11/4

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: I will give a demonstration on cutting the center brace for the bench the students will be using the power cut off saw. Students will be given a study sheet for the power cut off saw and then the following day will be given a quiz on the piece of equipment. They must pass the test before they may use it.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue t6o work on projects. I will be helping students with all processes as the work on projects.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: If demonstration was not given on Thursday on making the acrylic mug this will be done today. This demonstration will be done in two parts. The first part will be sanding the ends of the acrylic tube. We will then choose the color for the bottom. I will then demon straight how students will cut the bottom out and glue it to one end of the tube.

Monday 10/17

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will be working on working on the Router project with the Plunge Router. They will be doing their name or a sports team only.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students are in the process of planning lumber down and getting wood ready to glue together. Students will continue with gluing
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: We will be cutting the plug for the end. I will be giving a demonstration on drilling the small holes in the end for salt and pepper to come out.

Tuesday 10/18

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will continue with Plunge Router project and sanding . They will also router all the edges on the router table. I will also be giving a demonstration on staining and explaining the differences between Paint and Stain. The differences between some stains.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to plane and cut lumber down for projects. I will give a review demonstration cutting a project piece down to the exact size and making sure that it is perfectly square.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will continue to drill small holes we will finish cutting the plugs for the large hole.
WENDNESDAY 10/19

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Some students will be finishing up on the plunge router. Other students will be starting to stain. They will be staining both router projects.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to work on projects. I will be around to each student to inspect their progress and to make sure they are not making any major mistakes.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will be finishing up any buffing and polishing and I will be grading their projects. Students will bring them up one by one so we can talk about the problems thy may have had doing this project.
Thursday 10/20

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will continue with staining. This will take two days to finish.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will continue to cut projects to finish sizes. I will give a demonstration on sanding. We will talk about going through a progression of steps to achieve the best quality finish.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: I will be finishing grading first. I will then start a demonstration on making a desk organizer out of acrylic. We will be gluing pieces together using the squeeze bottles. This demonstration will take most of the period.
Friday 10/21

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will finish staining. Students who were done staining before today will be painting the inside of the letters if they choose.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: I will be giving a demonstration of different types of joints that are used in cabinet construction I will start out with the Dado Joints. I will be showing how they are cut using the table saw.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: Students will be working on the desk organizer project this will take approximately there days till all students are done.

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will be finishing the Free Hand routering project. We will also be planeing lumber down For our next router project. This will take the whole period. We will be using Poplar.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students are in the process of planning lumber down and getting wood ready to glue together. I will be giving a demonstration on gluing along edge grain. Students will learn proper procedures and what to look for when gluing.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: I will be giving a demonstration on drilling 11/16” hole in each of their blocks and then tapping it with the threading tool.

I want the students to have a full understanding of how the plunge router will be used and how we will be using the letter jigs to create a perfect name plate.

Monday 10/3

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: We will be starting are first project together. We will be planeing Poplar boards down to ¾”. We will do this together so all students have an opportunity to perform the steps need to run the planer safely under my close super vision. My objective for students is to fully understand how to safely use this machine.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: Students will be working on finding project plans and having them approved by me. I will be helping students locate project plans on the computer and printing them out.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: We will be working on cutting the 2” X 4” block apart into two 1 ¾” X 1 ¾” blocks. We will be using the table saw to perform this process. This will take proximity two class periods to cut all of them to size.
Tuesday 10/4

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: I will be giving a demonstration on using the two different types of router we have in the shop. This will be and in-depth demonstration and will take the entire period. We will use the fixed router and the Plunge router. Students will need to decide what they will be putting on the two boards they will be doing. They may choose from their names or a sports team.
Pd. 5 Advanced Cabinetmaking: I will be lecturing on how to figure out how much would will be used to make their projects and also how much it will cost.
Pd. 2,3 Plastics Technology: We will continue with cutting the blocks to size. I will also give students a demonstration on sanding the blocks on the 12” disc sander. I will give demonstration on sanding using the hand sanders with 100 grit paper.

Pd. 1,4,7 Basic Wood: Students will first be doing the free hand project. This will take approximately two days to finish the free hand project. I will be supervising each student that is routering at the time.

Pd. 4,5 Plastics: Will demonstrate sanding process of this project. We will go through three different levels of sanding. If time allows we will go to the buffing machine.
